Pumpkins and Color Mixing

After reading the book, By the Light of the Halloween Moon the children drew still life pumpkins under the silvery moon. When we got ready to paint we realized we didn't have any orange, green, or brown paint (we really did).  This is how we introduced color mixing.

yellow + red = orange (pumpkin)               yellow + blue = green (leaves)

yellow + blue + red = brown (stem)

When dry cut the pumpkins and leaves and place on black construction paper.

As a class we talked about how the moon was reflecting on the objects below.  

We also discussed how the illustrator was able to get his idea on paper.

The children used pastel chalk to highlight their pumpkin and leaves.  They used their fingers to soften hard lines. A moon, stars, and vines were also added.
